Turbulence Model

Standard k-ε for everything.

Selection based on Reynolds number, flow characteristics (separated, swirling), and wall treatment. Often SST k-ω for aerospace or Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) for complex anisotropic flows.

Choosing the wrong turbulence model gives you garbage results, fast. k-ε fails badly in adverse pressure gradients. SST k-ω is superior for boundary layer separation prediction.

Solver Settings

Default convergence criteria (e.g., 1e-3).

Custom convergence criteria based on monitored integral quantities (e.g., drag, mass flow rate) stabilizing, not just residuals dropping. Double precision solvers.

Residuals are a poor indicator of true convergence. A solution is converged only when the quantities of interest are stable. This prevents premature termination of the simulation.

Near-Wall Treatment

Standard Wall Functions (assuming y+ > 30).

Mesh resolved to the viscous sublayer (y+ ≈ 1) where necessary, or careful application of appropriate wall functions when a fine mesh is computationally prohibitive.

The near-wall region dictates skin friction, drag, and heat transfer. Getting this wrong invalidates the entire simulation for many applications. There is no middle ground here.

 

 

 

Model Validation Against Experimental Data or Established Publications.

A simulation without validation is just an opinion. After we achieve a converged and grid-independent solution, we benchmark our model against a known quantity. This could be experimental data you provide, wind tunnel data from a similar case in a research paper, or established empirical correlations.
